Countering terrorism

We contribute to global efforts to counter all forms of violent extremism that pose a threat to New Zealand’s national security and international security.

Foreign focus

We continue to make a contribution to global counter-terrorism efforts.

Domestic focus

Domestically we work closely with the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) and the New Zealand Police. We assist through our technical capabilities, access to intelligence originating outside of New Zealand and by contributing to understanding emerging terrorism threats to New Zealand and New Zealand’s interests.

Increasing our domestic counter-terrorism effort

We have substantively increased our focus on domestic counter-terrorism since the introduction of the Intelligence and Security Act 2017.

In response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the terrorist attack on Christchurch masjidain (2020) we have further increased our support to NZSIS and NZ Police on domestic terrorism-related investigations.

We have also focused on building closer working relationship with NZSIS and New Zealand Police, through joint operations and staff secondments.
